Favorite Yoga Quotes
Here's some safety advice from Jack Handey for when us non-judgmental yogis feel
the compulsive need to, well, judge:
"Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way,
when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes."

Hey, I've got an idea that would make at least one of us feel good: on my first
day blogging you could post something, comment on stuff, make unreasonable requests,
complain about my humor, or having to pre-pay to get on the waiting list (I mean,
who does this guy think he is?), or some drama at your studio, gurus falling from
grace, or anything else you can think of -- just rant, celebrate, pontificate, elucidate
and prognosticate... Just don't leave me with the blank page of doom, marked by
the scariest words in Blogdom: "No Comments" (which translates roughly to, Dude,
you're kinda boring me). Anything but that! My fate as a blogger is in your hands.
Well, not really, but you should consider posting anyway, even just to introduce
yourself.
Is this high tech, or what?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Namasté david,
Happy Spring! In this part of the world, life's vibrance is bursting forth everywhere.
If there was a soundtrack to this experience, it would be like the Earth singing
with beauty, grace and power after a long bout with a stuffy nose and laryngitis.
This issue is packed with a lot of useful and fun stuff, so let's dive right in.
First things first: After years of unfounded resistance, I have succumbed to the
inevitable... that's right, I'm announcing the debut of my Blog. And, I'm having
a contest to find the perfect name for it. Write to me with your ideas and if yours
is... Wait, never mind, it just came through (I love it when that happens!): I'll
name it Upward Facing Blog. Cute, huh? To read the first installment, go to to
my website by clicking on that grinning guy to the left or scroll down and scan
the square graphic thingy with your smartphone. Your participation is warmly anticipated.
So, a few weeks ago, my wife declared: "I want to watch the Oscars!" A perfectly
legitimate request, a good way to unwind after a busy week... except that, well,
we don't have a TV. So, naturally, I put on my Geek hat, commandeered the Living
Room (usually the domain of our cat, and went to work to solve the problem. Hours
later, in a tangle of cables, multiple computers, gizmos, doohickies and the occasional
muttering of expletives under my breath, I'm happy to report that we missed only
a few minutes of the "stars" walking in on the Red Carpet (hang with me here, this
really does have some relevance to this newsletter's theme... no, really) and just
in time for me to hear the celebrities being asked by wide-eyed fashion reporters,
"Who are you wearing?"
As ridiculous as that question sounds to me, and as tempting as it is to make a
couple of poignant, snarky comments, I'll refrain. Besides, I was much more intrigued
by how these celebrities carried themselves; the air of calm confidence they radiate;
the obvious, natural claim of abundance residing deep in the core of their being.
They know. And as a culture, we "celebrate" them by giving them tons of money --
not so much for entertaining us, but for being big in the world, for fearlessly
putting themselves out there. We're paying them so we can live vicariously through
them, paying them for doing what most of us won't do. This makes them our heroes,
and us... well, we're mostly fans. Sure, they can inspire us (as you will experience
in watching this month's video in the Etc. section below) -- but only we can claim
our own prosperity. This perennial theme will be a good discussion topic for my
first Blog rant.
Congratulations go out to the 1287 people who correctly identified the fascinating
and apparently not-so-mysterious close-up of Broccolini Romanesca's fractal growth
pattern. Some of my
younger, vegetable-savvy readers definitely had a certain, uh, tone to their terse
reply -- as in, "Dude... It's, like, Romanesca... Duh! Seriously, whatever."
OK, remind me next time I try to intrigue you with my child-like wonder, that yoga
apparently makes you smarter, more informed, observant and knowledgeable -- and
that I should kick it up a notch if I want to play in the big leagues! OK, I get
it... it's Einstein equations from now on... fun for the whole family!
Actually, regarding fun as an integral part of business, the shocking truth is that
in conjunction with good advice, clear guidance and creative, collaborative thinking,
the more fun I have with my clients, the more prosperous they seem to become. My
theory is that when we embody lightness and trust in our very being, we attract
people to ourselves and our business. A knowing-ness that all is well and unfolding
as it should is a much more enjoyable way to live than worrying all the time. The
fact that it also sets the stage for abundance is no accident. That's what this
issue is about.
Want to get a dose of prosperity consciousness "live?" Join our seva-driven tele-class.
Details below.
Oh, yeah, one more thing: if you make it through this edition relatively unscathed,
I have a gift for you (I made it myself)... but you'll have to find it.
In gratitude... Enjoy.
Kicking Scarcity's Butt
Don't let this happen to you!
Face it. Scarcity Thinking is everywhere these days. If left unchecked and we don't
counteract it, it can wreak havoc on our lives and businesses. However, we can do
something about it.
We humans are wired to get more of what we spend our precious energy thinking about.
I know -- this is not a "normal" business subject. Well, it should be.
As rich and abundant a life as Yoga offers practitioners-- it is still a reality
that even in this community, especially around issues of prosperity, we still encounter
so much scarcity thinking.
Even with all the right marketing, positioning and branding in place, scarcity thinking
can kill a business. Conversely, prosperity thinking can bring it to life.
Why do some studios thrive while others whither? Yes, it has a lot to do with the
very marketing issues I discuss on these pages and on the Teleclasses-- but it's
more than that. What is happening in the mind of the owner and the mind of the
teacher is just as important, maybe more so. The prosperous business owners have
something in common, they expect success.
I have heard from so many clients that shortly after starting to work with me, magical
things start happening in their business. It seems that even just the alignment
with a positive source, someone who refuses to let you get away with scarcity thinking,
can change the course of things rather quickly.
A story: In 1954, Roger Bannister, an English runner, had a choice to make. At that
time, doctors and sports physiologists stated over and over in the sports media
that the human body is simply not capable of running a 4-minute mile... that it
would fall apart. Roger, that insubordinate rascal, decided not to buy in to that
widely accepted "truth."
Here's what he said about his historic race:
"My legs seemed to meet no resistance at all, as if propelled by some unknown force.
I was relaxing so much that my mind seemed almost detached from my body. There was
no strain.
There was no pain, only a great unity of movement and aim. The world seemed to stand
still, or did not exist. The only reality was the next two hundred yards of track
under my feet."
What is much more important to me than his great achievement of breaking the 4-minute
mile, is that the following year, eleven more runners accomplished the very same
thing!
What changed? Nothing, except that now, everyone believed it was possible.
I'll believe it when I see it! is a common expression in our skeptical culture...
but that's just how the masses have been trained to think... the truth, as proven
by Roger and anyone who has achieved or created something beyond what was thought
possible, is: You'll see it when you believe it!
Could thoughts be that powerful? Yes. They are - and how you think can make or break
your business. On our next Teleclass, we're going to discuss how to make your mind
work for you in building your bottom line.
Don't miss it, unless you can afford to. Read below for details.
The Spirit of Yoga
What Are We Missing?
A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it
was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During
that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that 1,100 people went through
the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing.
He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet his
schedule.
A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money
in the till without stopping, and continued to walk.
A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man
looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly, he was late for work.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year-old boy. His mother tagged him
along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother
pulled harder, and the child continued to walk, turning his head back every few
steps. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without
exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while.
About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32.
When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded,
nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians
in the world. He had just played one of the most intricate pieces ever written,
on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in
Boston where the seats averaged $100 each.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized
by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and
priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate
hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent
in an unexpected context?
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the
world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?
For us yogis, this story is a great reminder to be present for each moment, whatever
it holds... and begs the question: can we do this while texting? Share your thoughts
on the blog page (I love being able to say that!).
Client Spotlight
Kristina Anderson
What an amazing time to be alive. To think that Kristina and I have been working
together for about a year, and not only have we never met, but she lives about
as far away from San Francisco as it's possible to go on this planet!
Those of you who remember life before cell phones and even fax machines, may appreciate
how my being able to speak with Kristina weekly, for free, still totally rocks my
world (back in the day, we kinda had to pay for things).
Kristina's young studio has transformed and blossomed under her dedicated leadership.
I am truly honored to have been her trusted ally from the other side of the globe.
Congratulations, Kristina. Well done!
Here's her story, enjoy.
Alón
New Studio Finds Its Wings
Just over one year ago I contacted Alón to investigate the possibility of working
together. My business had been in operation 10 months. I'd just had my worst month
both student visits and dollar wise. I knew of Alón before that; before I opened
my business even. I was receiving his newsletters and had joined in on a tele-class.
At the build-out stage before I opened, I considered contacting him. But I was very
busy. I didn't make the call. BIG MISTAKE.
There are so many facets that drive a yoga studio and as the owner, especially a
new owner, you simply cannot know of them all and their accompanying pitfalls.
Yeah I know, many life lessons come through these curve balls, but I tell ya, if
you can avoid the OBVIOUS ones then you will save yourself a whole lot of money,
aggravation and heartache.
The first thing I experienced was RELIEF that I had an ally. Simply just by sharing
the huge burden and responsibility of what I had undertaken made me feel better.
I trusted Alón immediately. Everything we talked about in those early days about
realigning the studio to be a reflection of the owner, (that would be me, not anyone
else) with my dreams and my visions and my goals and who I am so that that would
be the vibration I send out into the world, totally resonated with me.
All that we did in the first 6 months was a lot of hard work but it was inspiring
and creative and felt RIGHT. I loved creating my business invitation which proudly
invites my business in, on my wall in reception, on my revamped website and my revamped
newsletter. This produced one aha! moment after the next, but the most profound
was the simplest. "Kristina, you cannot be all things to all people". Obvious right?
Not to me, until it was spoken out loud.
My only regret with working with Alón is that I didn't do it sooner. He has this
uncanny ability to draw the essence of who you are out, mold it into a useable
and useful form as this essential ingredient that IS the foundation of your business.
He likes to laugh, thank god, and he likes people to shine. Thank god. But he's
not a candy coater either. "To be frank with you Kristina, it's boring." Love that
straight shooting!
Just ask yourself what's the worst thing that could happen by employing Alón's services?
I suppose you could discover you are in the wrong business. What a relief and blessing
that would be. Then again you might triple your student visits and income in one
year (as I've experienced), or maybe take a well-earned holiday (Hello yoga retreat
in the French Riviera!) and maybe the best part, start leading the life you envisaged
whilst bringing your gift to the world. I reckon that's a pretty good punt!
So many positive things have happened in the last year. Thank-you Alón for recognizing
your gifts as a human being, a business guy and a yogi practitioner; gift wrapping
them into one and presenting them to the world. You don't have to live in the States
to partake in this package of wisdom either. I live in New Zealand. Skype is a wonderful
thing. And we kind've speak the same language, eh Alón? :o)
