Yoga is not just for adults. Many children are
participating in yoga and benefiting from it a great
deal.
Many parents are looking to yoga as form of exercise
and relaxation for their children. In todays world
children often experience as much stress as adults and
can benefit equally from the relaxation techniques yoga
teaches.
When contemplating yoga for your children there are a few
guidelines you should keep in mind.
First and foremost, when choosing a yoga instructor do
not let price be a deciding factor. You want to choose
a competent, certified yoga instructor for your child,
just as you would want the same if you were choosing a
doctor, dentist or daycare provider for your child.
This is not to say that the highest-priced instructor is
the best. But rather that you should do your research
and ask for credentials, then consider price.
You may also want to search for an instructor that
specializes in teaching yoga to children, or one who has
experience with children rather than an instructor who
is accustom to only working with adults.
Work with your child to help them see the deeper benefits
of yoga. This will help them develop a better
understanding of what yoga really is beyond all the
postures and stretching.
Children tend to stick to something new if they have a
fairly firm grasp on what its for and how it can
benefit them. Do not, however, push your child.
This will only serve to frustrate them and make them
more stressed out and possibly disinterested in yoga.
You'll want to discuss with your childs yoga instructor
before encouraging a yoga routine at home.
Despite the awesome flexibility that most children have,
they can easily hurt themselves since they tend to be less
aware of their own physical limitations.
And an injury from yoga could easily discourage your child
from wanting to continue to practice.
Many yoga centers offer parent and child yoga classes.
This may be an ideal way to determine if your child is
truly interested in practicing yoga.
It can also help foster a bond between you and your
child that you may not otherwise experience, not to
mention provide a great way for you and your child to
relax and unwind together.
