It seems that today everyone is practicing yoga, from
movie stars to singers, doctors to waitresses. But
with so many different styles of yoga it can be very
difficult to choose which is right for you.
The decision of which type of yoga is for you, ultimately
is a personal decision. You must take the time to
consider what you want to gain from practicing yoga,
along with how involved in it you want to become.
Yoga can be used merely as a means of exercise or
you can choose to get involved fully, adopting a
yogic lifestyle.
To help make your decision easier I've compiled a list
of the most common yoga types and will tell you a bit
about each one.
Ashtanga Yoga involves a series of sequential,
fast-paced poses. It is one of the most popular types of
yoga, leading you through six sequences of poses, one at
each class.
Each sequence varies in difficulty, ultimately
allowing everyone from beginner to long-time yogi to
participate.
Hatha Yoga one of the most common styles of yoga. This
type of yoga is perfect for the beginner with fairly
easy to perform poses. It stresses slow breathing and
meditation.
Bikram Yoga is designed to reflect the birthplace of
yoga, India. A more traditional style of yoga,
Bikram Yoga follows the original thinking of long ago
that sweating purges harmful toxins from the body.
In order to accomplish this, the heat is turned up in the
space where it is practiced.
Iyengar Yoga is probably the most common style of
yoga being practiced in the US. It focuses on
predominantly standing positions which allow for more
concentration on skeletal and muscular alignment.
These are just a few of the many types of yoga. As
you can see just from this sampling theres a little
something for everybody.
