Can Yoga Make You Stronger?

Hi David,

Many people question whether or not yoga with its
low-impact stretching exercises can make you stronger.

They simply cannot see how a series of gentle
stretches and poses can provide the necessary
workout to make their muscles stronger. Well, yoga
can make you stronger.

Unlike in workouts like weight lifting, in yoga your
body provides the resistance during the workout. Granted,
you're probably not going to see bulky muscles as the
result of your yoga routine, however you will indeed
increase your muscle strength.

Not to mention, yoga can be used in combination
with other fitness routines to provide more desirable
results.

Many of the poses performed in yoga are done very
slowly or held for several breaths. Its much more
challenging for your muscles to hold the same pose or
do it very slowly than it is to do quick repetitions or
fast moves in other exercises. The pace of this
type of routine has a great impact on your muscles.

The stretching exercises practiced in yoga also stretch
the fascia, which is the protective sheath covering all
muscles and muscle cells in your body.

The stretching of the fascia allows the muscles underneath
to grow more and giving the muscles greater shape. This
also allows for a more well-defined physique.

Lastly, when practicing yoga you are engaging in a
complete, whole body workout.

You are not merely isolating one group of muscles at a
time. Instead you are actively working every muscle
group in your body during a yoga routine.

This makes for a very effective workout every time.

As you can see, yoga can indeed make you stronger.
Granted, a yoga workout will not give you a bulky or
muscle-bound physique on its own, however you will
have increased strength.

As I mentioned earlier yoga is a great routine to use in
conjunction with other fitness workouts. So if bulk
is what you desire you can use yoga along with
weight lifting and other exercises to maximize your
results.
